Low power view of dystrophic calcification in skeletal muscle

A low power view of dystrophic calcification in skeletal muscle.
The black arrows point to cross and longitudinal sections through normal skeletal muscle fibers.
The greeen arrows point to foci of calcification within this tissue.
In routine histological staining, calcium deposits take on a homogeneous deep purple stain.
They are also acellular.
Dystrophic calcification occurs as a result of tissue injury and necrosis.
Calcium salts are deposited in the areas of necrosis resulting in the appearance of white, chalky areas grossly and acellular purple staining areas in histology.
