| Aspergillus These dark lesions in the cerebral and
cerebellar hemispheres are recent abscesses due to
the fungus Aspergillus, which invades blood vessels
throughout the body. Older abscesses have a three
layer capsule, the first layer being the center, full of
necrotic neutrophils, macrophages and organisms. The
next layer is a collagenous capsule with inflammatory
cells and the last layer is a band of astrogliosis with
inflammatory cells. These abscesses can cause death
by causing edema and herniation, breeching of the
capsule and spreading cerebritis or rupture into a
ventricle with ventriculitis and meningitis.
