Etiology
• Bone or other indigestible, hard material
|
Pathogenesis
• Hard, incompressible mass lodges in intestine and lacerates bowel
• Alternative may be compression of blood supply with necrosis of bowel,
|
Epidemiology
• Uncommon.
• May be secondary to bezoar caused by eating indigestible materials, accumulation of undigested medication or enteric feedings.
• May be psychiatric symptom
|
General Gross Description
• Acute laceration with hemorrhage around the perforation
• Foreign body usually still in place
|
General Microscopic Description
• Tissue disruption and hemorrhage
|
Clinical Correlation
• Treated by resection
|
