Note that the point of exit is more irregular and shows more fragmentation than the point of entry which has a smoother more uniform shape

Etiology

Variety of guns including handguns, semiautomatic weapons, rifles and shotguns.
Pathogenesis

Bullet transmits kinetic energy to tissue
Damage related to bullet type, distance from target, and materials that the bullet traversed before striking the organ.,
Epidemiology

Epidemic proportions in U.S. with >30,000 deaths/year in the 90's
Among top 10 causes of death in the U.S.
Particular problem in children (accidental) and young adults (homicide)
General Gross Description

Irregular perforations of the bowel accompanied by acute hemorrhage.
General Microscopic Description

Tissue disruption with hemorrhage.
Clinical Correlation

Treat small bowel lesions by resection.
Peritoneal cavity will contain bowel contents.
Outcome dependent on other injuries and blood loss.
