Adult Polycystic Kidney Disease
Adult Polycystic Kidney Disease

The pathogenesis of cyst formation in adult polycystic kidney disease is believed to be basically that of hyperplasia.
It is thought that the tubular epithelial cells remain in a state of immaturity, short of complete maturation/differentiation
Most of the epithelium lining the cysts of these kidneys are single layered and not histologically hyperplastic.
Occasional cysts however, such as in this photograph does show histologic hyperplasia with heaped up epithelial cells and small papillary formations.
