Squamous Cell Carcinoma in Situ (40X)
Squamous Cell Carcinoma in Situ (40X)

This close up image shows lack of maturation of the squamous epithelium.
The basal portion of the epithelium is to the lower right; the superficial epithelium is in the upper left hand corner.
The arrow points to a mitotic figure located only a few layers beneath the surface.
The location of this mitosis identifies the process as intraepithelial neoplasia or dysplasia.
Note the nuclei are round to oval with some chromatin clumping.
