| Squamous Cell Carcinoma in Situ (40X)
| This close up image shows lack of maturation of the squamous epithelium.
The basal portion of the epithelium is to the lower right; the superficial epithelium is in the upper left hand corner.
The arrow points to a mitotic figure located only a few layers beneath the surface.
The location of this mitosis identifies the process as intraepithelial neoplasia or dysplasia.
Note the nuclei are round to oval with some chromatin clumping.
