Intervillositis

•  The villi are relatively large in this immature placenta.

•  The intervillus space contains an excess number of nucleated cells for normal circulating maternal blood, as demonstrated by the black arrow.

Epidemiology

• May be associated with chronic non-specific villitis

• May be associated with euploid spontaneous abortion


Clinical

• May recur

• May be associated with decidual vascular thrombosis and euploid early spontaneous losses.


General Gross Description

• No gross findings


General Micro Description

• Accumulation of mononuclear cells (maternal CD3+ cells) in intervillous space

• May accompany actual villitis
