Normal Chorionic Plate (Low Power)
• This view of the chorionic plate highlights the amnionic epithelium and underlying amniotic mesoderm which forms the upper portion of the plate (black arrows). • The remaining mesoderm is chorionic. • The blue arrows surround the underlying subchorionic fibrin which becomes more pronounced as term approaches.

General Gross Description

Fetal surface of the placenta with a glistening gray surface
Umbilical cord inserts into the chorionic plate
Contains fetal arteries and veins with arteries coursing over veins
Stem villi originate from the underside of the chorionic plate.
General Microscopic Description

Surface covered by amniotic epithelium lying on a compact connective tissue layer on top of the amniotic mesoderm
Spongy layer separating amniotic from chorionic mesoderm
Bottom of the chorionic mesoderm contains trophoblasts lying over subchorionic (Langhans) fibrin or fibrinoid
Fetal vessels are located in the chorionic plate; differentiating between fetal arteries and veins histologically is not easily accomplished
Stem villi depend from chorionic plate
Clinical Correlation
