Amnion Band

This is a view of the chorionic plate.
The probe demostrates a strand of amniotic tissue that is hanging from the amnion epithelium on the chorionic plate. Strands such as this are called amniotic band and can be seen anywhere along the surface of the amnion in a delivered placenta.

Amnion Band
Etiology

Rupture of the amnionic sac with free "bands" of amnion.
Bands can wrap around fetal extremities and/or umbilical cord to cause amputation or demise
Pathogenesis

Unknown what causes rupture
Bands entangle and mechanically constrict and amputate limbs,
Epidemiology

Spontaneous, usually not accompanying abnormal pregnancy
1/10,000 live births with signficant (30%) mortality rate
Sporadic, non-recurrent
General Gross Description

Bands are delicate, fibrous and may be difficult to find
General Microscopic Description

Amnionic epithelium and mesoderm
No inflammation and little degeneration
Clinical Correlation

Outcome dependent on what the band is wrapped around
Unclear whether infants that fuse to the chorion often with massive limb or body wall defects are part of same syndrome.
